Dr. Gary Hunt

Portrait of Dr. Gary Hunt with Chester
Dr Hunt is a life-long animal lover, originally from the Midwest.  He holds a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine and a BS in Zoology, both from The Ohio State University.  While a vet student, he worked as a technician at The Capital Area Humane Society.  During his final year of vet school, Dr Hunt had a unique opportunity to do hospital rotations with both veterinarian-editors of the reference book “Small Animal Internal Medicine”.  One of them was at the University of California at Davis, which is what initially brought Dr Hunt out west.  During his UC Davis trip, he traveled and visited with veterinarians from Northern California, Oregon, and Washington.  He was taken with Portland’s energy, environment, and strong veterinary community.  Upon graduation in 1996, Dr Hunt returned to Portland and began practice.

He practiced at Laurelhurst Veterinary Hospital in NE Portland for 5 years.  Later, he practiced at Barbur Blvd Veterinary Hospital in SW Portland (with the local vet-cardiologist) for almost 7 years.  His professional interests include geriatrics, infectious disease, feline medicine, and dermatology.

Dr Hunt lives in Hillsdale with his wife, Tracy Waechter, DVM, daughter Izabella, Great Pyrenees dog Mattie, and his Siamese cat from vet school, Chester.  He volunteers regularly at Rieke Elementary School.  He is also active in salmon recovery efforts through various organizations.  In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, hiking, and playing guitar and mandolin.
