Caly’s Journey: Beating FIP With Prompt Treatment
Meet Caly, the shy yet spirited 5-month-old orange tabby. When she first arrived at our hospital as a tiny kitten at 9 weeks old, she was gravely ill. She suffered from chronic diarrhea, had stopped eating and drinking, and developed severe abdominal fluid (ascites) along with dangerously high kidney and liver enzymes. Caly was on death’s door. Caly wouldn’t stop fighting so neither did we.
After a long road of tests she was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) — once considered a fatal disease in young cats. FIP can show up in several forms:
- Wet (effusive): fluid in the abdomen or chest
- Ocular: eye inflammation, color changes, or vision issues
- Neurologic: weakness, tremors, or seizures
Because we recognized her symptoms early, Caly was able to begin an 84-day course of GS-441524, the new antiviral medication recently released for FIP. With close monitoring and supportive care, she made a miraculous recovery and is now thriving — playful, growing, and finally becoming the healthy kitten she was meant to be. She is up for adoption!
